Vinčić Winery’s “Grand Fru Grašac” won the Taste Award last year for the best white wine in Serbia. Last week, members of the Taste Awards jury visited this now-famous winery, whose labels have won some of the world’s most prestigious awards and are served in top hotels in London
The winery’s “Grašac Beli 2020” was awarded Best in Show at the Decanter Wine World Awards in London in 2023, placing it among the nine best white wines at the world’s most important wine competition.
This prestigious title is proof of the potential of the grape variety that was once commonly known in Yugoslavia as Italian Riesling. At the time, it was used to produce cheap wine in massive quantities, which severely damaged the variety’s reputation. In recent years, that injustice is being corrected, and the triumph at Decanter will certainly go a long way toward that goal.
The vineyard is located at an altitude of 250 meters, in a position called Zaravan, “where the first wind arrives from the direction of Budapest, as everything north of here is flat all the way to the Hungarian capital,” says Aleksandar Vinčić, the winery’s owner and certainly one of the most knowledgeable winemakers in Serbia.
Members of the Taste Awards jury enjoyed the wines and Srem specialties, prepared in a modern style using local ingredients.
By the end of September, the jury will also visit the “Thyme” restaurant in Belgrade, whose chef Lazar Svrkota won last year’s Taste Award for the best chef under 30, as well as the Aleva company in Novi Kneževac, awarded for the best spice.
On October 1st, applications for the Taste Awards 2025 will open. You can see highlights from previous visits to laureates and the 2023 and 2024 award ceremonies here: https://www.communications.rs/tasteawards2025/
Starting this year, the “Taste Awards” is introducing a new category: “Best Food (Agrotourism)”, where we will be evaluating the best food offerings in rural households.
