What connects Serbia and Malta?

Although Malta is more than 1000 km away from Serbia by air, many connections have existed for a long time firmly connect these two countries

Monument of remembrance

A recent initiative of Serbs from Malta resulted in the unveiling of a monument erected as a sign of gratitude for the rescue of Serbian soldiers in Marsaskala. In 1918, a German submarine hit the French SS Polynesia in Marsaskala, Malta, which was transporting 500 Serbian officer cadets from Bizerte to the Macedonian Front. Maltese fishermen and local residents used their small boats to rush to the aid of the shipwrecked Serbs, saving the majority from drowning. Among them was famous war heroine Milunka Savić.

Serbian Orthodox Church

The Serbian Orthodox Missionary Parish of St. Paul the Apostle and St. Nicholas signed a contract in 2021 for the use of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Birżebbuģa for a period of 25 years. The church has since been renovated and redecorated thanks to Serbs who live and work in Malta.
