“Medusa” Parade at the Petrovaradin Carnival

The tradition of the Petrovaradin Carnival was revived in 2023 and has since successfully brought together lovers of carnival festivities, as well as all those who wish to experience old customs and the spirit of local heritage

The carnival features masked and lively processions, and its essence lies in celebrating the departure of evil and darkness, welcoming the arrival of light, the new sun, and fertility. A notable element is the wearing of masks that conceal one’s true face with another, which according to tradition serves as protection against evil spirits, while also inspiring awe, admiration, or laughter—making each performance especially vibrant and festive.

This year, the carnival was held for the third consecutive time at the Petrovaradin Volunteer Fire Department. The event was organized by the Croatian Cultural and Artistic Society “Jelačić” Petrovaradin and the Petrovaradin Media Citizens’ Association. The carnival was opened by Mirko Tursić, President of HKPD “Jelačić” Petrovaradin, and among the attendees was Vlatko Ćaćić from the Federation of European Carnival Cities. The program unfolded in a spirit of tradition and entertainment, with stage performances that offered an unforgettable experience to all guests.

The first to perform were members of HKPD “Jelačić” with their group mask “Medusa,” a symbol of renewal and the eternal cycle of life, but also an inspiration drawn from Greek mythology, where medusas embodied seductive and dangerous figures. After them, the tamburitza orchestra of HKPD “Jelačić,” led by artistic director Prof. Biljana Kuzmanović, performed a repertoire that included traditional songs from Petrovaradin, Srem, and Slavonia, as well as popular music by domestic and foreign authors, winning over the audience with familiar and beloved melodies.

Following the orchestra, the women’s singing group of HKUPD “Stanislav Preprek” from Novi Sad took the stage, enchanting the audience with their performance and group mask. The carnival concluded with the performance of HKPD “Tomislav” from Golubinci, who presented their award-winning mask and showcased the tradition of the Golubinci mačkari—an old carnival custom over 250 years long, listed on the map of European Carnival Cities.

The atmosphere throughout the event was cheerful and lively, filled with colors, music, and costumes, while guests enthusiastically followed every performance. Once again, Petrovaradin proved itself a worthy host of an event that successfully preserves tradition, community, and the joy of the carnival spirit.
