Philip Morris Begins Commercialization of lil SOLID 2.0 device

Collaboration with KT&G company, the manufacturer of this device, broadens the Company’s portfolio of smoke-free products for those adults who would otherwise continue to smoke

Philip Morris will begin commercialization of a KT&G’s product, lil SOLID 2.0, supported by IQOS in Serbia. This collaboration between Philip Morris and KT&G, the leading South Korean tobacco and nicotine company follows an agreement between the two companies signed in January 2020.

lil SOLID 2.0 is a modernly designed, compact device which does not burn but heats tobacco and enables three consecutive consumptions with 25 sticks without recharging. Envisaged for adult smokers who do not want to quit cigarettes, the lil SOLID 2.0 device, with popular IQOS, now complements PMI’s existing portfolio of heat-not-burn system in Serbia. Lil SOLID 2.0 will use the same distribution channels as IQOS, the best-selling tobacco heating device in the world.

“The ambition of Philip Morris company is that all those who would otherwise continue to smoke switch to better alternatives and abandon cigarettes to the benefit of their health and public health in general. The commercialization of this KT&G’s product in the local market will complement our target, providing adult smokers with an even broader range of technology options as well as price,” said Aleksandar Jakovljević, PMI’s CEO for South East Europe.

lil SOLID devices to be distributed are subject to a careful assessment prior to commercialization to ensure they meet the applicable regulatory and general safety requirements in the markets where they are launched, as well as PMI’s high standards of scientific substantiation to confirm the absence of combustion and significant reductions in emissions of harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.

This important step toward delivering a smoke-free future builds on other recent milestones related to PMI’s existing portfolio of smoke-free products. Ever since its launch in 2014, more than 19 million smokers have already switched to IQOS and 14 million quit cigarettes for good. In July 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the marketing of the IQOS Tobacco Heating System as a modified risk tobacco product (MRTP), recognizing that scientific studies show that a full switch from cigarettes to the IQOS “reduces exposure of human body to harmful and potentially harmful chemicals” and that the IQOS Tobacco Heating System is appropriate to promote the public health.
