J’ACCUSE: AN OFFICER AND A SPY

This time around, Arena Cineplex and Diplomacy & Commerce recommend a new film, directed by Roman Polanski, called “An Officer and a Spy”.

The film depicts the notorious Dreyfus affair of the late 19th century. Captain Alfred Dreyfus, one of the few Jews who were members of the General Staff of the French Army, was unjustly convicted in 1894 on charges of spying for Germany. French officer Georges Picquart risks his career and his life trying, for a whole decade, to uncover the truth and free the falsely accused Dreyfus from a terrible prison on Devil’s Island. Discovering criminal behaviour that involved virtually the entire General Staff of the French Army and supported by most of the political establishment, Picquart caused a political earthquake in France
